Frost Law Rip Off

Fixing "Illegal" tickets

2022 FROST LAW/MONEY GRAB IS IN FULL EFFECT!!!

Huron Township is facing criticism for how they handle seasonal weight restrictions, particularly at the intersection of Sibley and Vinning. The township has been accused of taking advantage of truck drivers who may not be aware of these restrictions, issuing heavy fines on violations. The fines are said to be particularly severe, with truck weights being reduced by 50% during the seasonal restrictions, which can result in substantial penalties for unsuspecting drivers.

The issue centers on two legal provisions: MCL 257.726 and MCL 257.722. The first one mandates that weight limitations should be clearly marked with signage, and the second governs the frost laws, or seasonal weight restrictions, outlining exemptions and the percentage by which weight limits are reduced. Critics argue that local municipalities, like Huron Township, fail to properly post signage, which would inform drivers of these restrictions, making it easier for them to issue hefty fines.

There's frustration with the fact that instead of actively deterring trucks from using restricted roads, the township has allegedly set up a situation where trucks are unknowingly violating the rules, resulting in fines. This passive enforcement approach has led to claims that the township is more focused on revenue generation rather than road protection.

Additionally, the MMUTCD (Michigan Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) suggests that ineffective signage should be removed, which would encourage municipalities to create clearer and more effective ways to enforce restrictions. Critics argue that the situation in Huron Township goes against the intended purpose of these laws, which is to protect roadways, not to create a source of revenue through fines.
